Training Progression

Here’s the general progression of our helicopter pilot training:


  • Private Pilot – Helicopter


  • Instrument – Helicopter

  • Commercial Pilot – Helicopter

  • Certified Flight Instructor (CFI) – Helicopter

  • Certified Flight Instructor – Instrument Helicopter (CFII)

Following this sequence ensures you have all the certifications and flight hours needed to launch a career as a commercial helicopter pilot.

Introductory Flights

Not sure if flight training is right for you? Start with an introductory flight — your chance to take the controls with a professional instructor by your side.


  • R44 (4 seats): $325 for 30 minutes (Weight limit: 300 lbs)

  • R22 (2 seats): $200 for 30 minutes (Weight limit: 220 lbs)

This hands-on experience gives you a taste of helicopter flying while answering any questions about training programs and career paths.

Helicopter Training Programs


Private Pilot – Helicopter


The Private Pilot course builds the foundation for your aviation journey. You’ll learn:


  • Helicopter handling (from hovering to emergency procedures)

  • Risk management and decision-making skills

  • Navigation, weather interpretation, and radio procedures

  • Heliport and airport operations

Time commitment:


  • FAA minimum: 40 hours of flight + 40 hours of ground training

  • Most students average: 55–70 hours

Instrument Rating – Helicopter


Enhance your abilities with instrument flight training. This course refines your skills, preparing you to:


  • Fly using instruments only in low-visibility conditions

  • Conduct instrument approaches

  • Navigate Instrument Flight Rule (IFR) procedures

  • Communicate effectively with air traffic control

Time commitment:


  • FAA minimum: 24 hours (Most students average 55–70 hours.)

  • This rating opens doors to advanced aviation jobs such as EMS pilots and offshore transport work.

Commercial Pilot – Rotorcraft


The Commercial Pilot course transforms your training into a career path. You’ll learn:


  • Advanced helicopter maneuvers (e.g., auto-rotations, off-airport landings)

  • Regulatory knowledge to legally fly for hire

  • Deeper understanding of helicopter systems and aerodynamics

Requirements:


  • Minimum of 150 total flight hours

Certified Flight Instructor – Instrument (CFII)


Becoming a Certified Flight Instructor is one of the most common first steps for professional pilots. This program will:


  • Teach you how to instruct students effectively

  • Refine your piloting skills through teaching

  • Prepare you for local and nationwide job opportunities

Requirements:


  • Minimum of 200 flight hours to teach in Robinson R22s and R44s (per SFAR 73)

Certified Flight Instructor – Instrument (CFII)

The CFII rating allows you to teach instrument students, further expanding your career options. This program helps you:


  • Develop advanced lessons for teaching instrument flight

  • Stay proficient in IFR operations

  • Build additional hours toward higher-level aviation roles

Helicopter Training Costs


Our training programs are all-inclusive, covering the aircraft, fuel, and instruction:


  • R44 (4 seats): $625/hour (300 lb max per seat)

  • R22 (2 seats): $355/hour (220 lb max per seat)
